Free Breast Cancer Screening for Women Aged 50-69 in Flanders: Early Detection for Successful Treatment

The Flemish Breast Cancer Population Survey gives women aged 50 to 69 the opportunity to have a high-quality screening mammography every two years. The examination is completely free if you are affiliated with a Belgian health insurance fund. So you don’t pay any co-payments.

Breast cancer can be detected at an early stage. This makes it one of the diseases that qualify for population screening. Early detection has some important advantages: because the disease is diagnosed earlier, complications or (more severe) treatment can be avoided and the chance of complete recovery is greater.

Every year, around 6,000 women in Flanders are diagnosed with breast cancer. It is the most common cancer in women. 3 out of 4 breast cancers occur in women over 50 years of age. About 1 in 5 women with breast cancer eventually die from the disease. That is why the Flemish government is organizing a Breast Cancer Population Survey for all women aged 50 to 69.

This test may allow us to see whether you have breast cancer before you notice it yourself. The sooner we detect breast cancer, the greater the chance of successful treatment. You decide whether you participate or not. Inform yourself well. Then you know what the research entails and what its purpose is.
