WHY THEFTS HAVE INCREASED

This increase is largely due to an increase in theft of specific Hyundai and Kia models, which are vulnerable to theft due to software vulnerabilities. This trend, fueled by viral videos on social media, emerged in the city in September 2022, skyrocketed three months later and continues to this day.

In September 2023, Mayor Adams released a comprehensive plan to address auto thefts in all five boroughs. The plan includes new law enforcement strategies, increased collaboration with public and private sector partners, and educational efforts. As a result, each NYPD district now has a motorized major theft radio patrol equipped with two mobile license plate readers, patrolling 24/7 and serving as a liaison with teams. of existing detectives within the jurisdiction of each district.

Additionally, the NYPD has designated a grand theft auto coordinator within its Crime Analysis Unit to improve data collection on stolen or lost vehicles and arrest tracking.
