For Van Hooijdonk and Vermeulen there seems to be only one serious option to succeed Marc Overmars as technical director: Max Huiberts. Since he started as technical director in Alkmaar in 2016, AZ has had one transfer success after another. Vincent Janssen, Myron Boadu, Guus Til, all players who made a lot of money for AZ.
Huibert knows about the hat and the brim
“Huiberts is one of the best candidates,” says Van Hooijdonk. “He knows the hat and the brim and has proved it.” Vermeulen agrees that Huiberts is “a fantastic” technical director. “He masters the trade,” says Vermeulen, but he lacks experience at Champions League level. “That means rebuilding contacts again.”
Whoever it will be: this is not a decision that you have to make with terrible haste, says Vermeulen. “The club must first make a good internal list: which way do we want to go?” The club will also have to consult head coach Ten Hag about what he will do next summer.
