Fredrik Hammar: Living the Dream and Chasing Fourth Place in Allsvenskan

Fredrik Hammar has started the last eleven Allsvenskan matches for Hammarby. He also recently signed a new long-term deal with the club he loves.

The 22-year-old is living the dream. Although he does not want to state that he is now cast in the starting eleven.

– I don’t want to say that… but it’s fucking fun. It’s a dream, but I’ve also worked damn hard to be where I am. I will continue to work as hard to keep my place. I have the same attitude as before, says Hammar.

How satisfied are you with the year?
– If someone had said in advance that the year would look like it did, I would have been damn happy, says Hammar and laughs.

– But I can’t go around and be mad that I’m where I am today. It takes hard work to perform. Then I enjoy life like hell.

When he describes how his expectations were before the season, he says:

– I wanted to make sure that I was allowed to remain in the squad. That was the first goal. Then the goal was to make a debut in the Allsvenskan and then to make a starting debut and so on. After the summer break, I have gained a lot of confidence, and it certainly indicates that I did well.

You have dreamed of this for a long time, how is it to be in this place now?
– It’s completely insane. It’s surreal. Extremely surreal. Sometimes I have to think: “Damn, is this right?”. It’s a very strange feeling. I have to stop and realize that I am here, and it is important to seize the moment and enjoy it. It is rare to actually get to play in Hammarby as a Hammarby supporter. Many people have dreamed of this.

The hard-working midfielder otherwise has great hope that Bajen will succeed in securing fourth place in this year’s Allsvenskan, and thereby overtake Djurgården.

– We know that it is up to us to get all the points we can get now. It’s always positive when the teams you’re chasing lose points, but the most important thing is that we pick up the points ourselves.

– For me, fourth place is our clear goal now. We will do everything in our power to try to squeeze it. Then victories like against Varberg are very important. We will continue on the same track since the autumn season started.

How much of the carrot is that you will be the best in town if you come fourth?
– Personally, it’s not a carrot. Hammarby wants to play in Europe and a good chance for that is to grab fourth place. That’s what we’re aiming for.

On Sunday, IFK Göteborg awaits Hammarby at home.

– They have done very well in the last few matches, and so have we, so it will be a fun match between two fairly strong teams.

– I actually have no idea about their team. The only thing I know is that Marcus Berg put the shoes on the shelf. That’s it. But they must have brought in some new things during the summer. (Astrit) Selmani for example, says Hammar.
