“I wanted (…) to rely on their feelings about what works and what works less,” she continues. “According to them, it was necessary to be present repeatedly, but with a strategy of questioning, not just presence,” explains Frédérique Camilleri.
“Before, we talked about harassment, but we cannot give the name of a criminal offense to a police strategy. There is this idea of ’crushing’, of carrying out repeated blows”, explains the prefect to our colleagues.
Born in Beirut in 1984 and describing herself as having an “oriental culture”, Frédérique Camilleri said with a laugh that she found the idea “in (her) kitchen” where the “pestle is a very present instrument”.
Since his arrival in Marseille in 2020, numerous resources have been allocated to this type of device.
Still numerous settling of scores
When the prefect’s upcoming departure was announced, her action was welcomed by several actors. Both the police unions and the political side.

Nevertheless, despite this welcomed action, the violence and the settling of scores continued. Last year, 47 people were shot dead amid competition between drug sellers in 2023, 14 more than the previous year.
“It’s a difficult subject, but we can reason through the absurd: what happens if we do nothing? If we put the police on other priorities? We abandon 300,000 inhabitants of the northern districts? We tells them, ‘You’re not part of the same Republic, so we’re going to let the drug dealers lay down the law in your country?'”, says the police chief.
She continues: “Of course the fight against trafficking requires a lot of resources, but it is an accepted choice. So that everyone has the same rights and so that criminal organizations do not come to challenge the power of the State.”
Frédérique Camilleri was appointed on Wednesday February 7 as prefect of Essonne. Pierre-Edouard Colliex will be appointed in his place as police prefect of Bouches-du-Rhône. Since 2022, he has been police advisor to the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin.
