Five hours and fifty-five minutes. This is what it took for Frédéric Lazaro and Pierre Gerbelot to complete the famous New York marathon. A great story, since Frédéric, sales manager in IT, becomes the first person with a femoral amputee to complete this journey. For 29 years, and after a motorcycle accident, he has been able to move around thanks to a prosthesis. And he embarked on this sporting adventure, Pierre, who is quite simply his orthoprosthetist.
It was the latter who accompanied him in his rehabilitation journey and search for a prosthesis adapted to physical activities. This equipment greatly helped Frédéric to rebuild his life, as did sport, which allowed him to build muscle, maintain himself and surpass himself. Sports practice has thus completely transformed the vision of his disability. Frédéric is an accomplished sportsman. Between running, cycling and swimming, he is constantly looking for new challenges. Before this marathon, he had already participated in a Half Iron Man as well as the Paris Marathon.
At his side, his orthoprosthetist had to prepare physically to take on this challenge. This inspiring journey also allows messages to be passed on. Pierre, who is an administrator of the French Union of Orthoprosthetists (UFOP), thus seeks to draw attention to the situation experienced by orthoprosthetists. This sector is in fact under pressure, between unattractive training, blocked regulated prices and obsolete nomenclature.
The lack of support for equipment adapted to sports practice is another aspect that the two athletes wanted to illustrate with this marathon. Frédéric had to take out a bank loan to equip himself. This message is all the more important as we are a few months away from the Paralympic Games.
