Freddy Rincón, historical Colombian ex-soccer player, dies

The Colombian former soccer player, Freddy Rincondied this Wednesday at the age of 55 in the Colombian city of Cali (southwest), where he suffered a serious traffic accident days ago.

“Despite all the efforts made by our medical and care team, the patient Freddy Eusebio Rincón Valencia has died today,” the Imbanaco Clinic said in a statement, where he was taken urgently on Monday morning after the crash.

A mass transit bus and “a van that apparently had four occupants (…) collided,” reported the Cali city mobility secretariat.

In a first balance, the mayor’s office registered five injured, including the former soccer player for Real Madrid, Naples and Corinthians, among others, and the bus driver, both treated in hospitals.

“We want to express our sincere condolences to his family, friends, relatives, followers around the planet. There will never be a way to express to them how it feels to lose one of our patients, whoever that patient is,” added the doctor.

Quintero asked the fans “to honor and exalt the life of Freddy Eusebio for all the joys he gave us, for everything that made us vibrate.”

Owner of a technique that made him stand out, Rincón was part of the Colombian teams that qualified for the World Cups in Italy in 1990, the United States in 1994 and, four years later, he was in France.

In addition to playing in Santa Fe and América de Cali, he also played with the Brazilians Corinthians, Santos and Cruzeiro. Wearing the Timao jersey, Rincón won the 1998 and 1999 league titles, as well as the first edition of the FIFA Club World Cup at the Maracanã stadium.
