Freddie Mercury’s Legendary Piano Sells for Record-Breaking Price at Auction

On this piano, Freddie Mercury composed his greatest songs with Queen, starting with the mythical “Bohemian Rhapsody” which appears on the album A Night at the Opera. Bought by the British singer for a thousand euros in 1975, his quarter-tail Yahama G2 sold for £1.742 million, or two million euros, at an auction held on Wednesday evening at Sotheby’s, London. This is a record for an artist’s piano, although it was estimated at £2-3 million.

More than an instrument, Freddie Mercury considered it “an extension of himself, his vehicle of creativity“, had declared before the event Mary Austin, the ex-fiancée of the rocker whom he had made his heiress before his death at the age of 45 in 1991. Sign of respect, “he never smoked on the piano or left a drink on it, making everyone act the same“, he had pointed out. “The piano was always impeccable“.
