The journey of a comic book artist with a disability. A tribute album.
He worked in an Esat Carpentry before his registration for a comic book contest for young people and adults with disabilities opened the doors to the 9th art. “Fred”, an album produced by several hands, is a tribute paid by the professionals of the Atelier du Marquis in Angoulême to the one they had welcomed, a designer who left too soon, carried away by Charcot’s disease.
Divided into several chapters with simple lines signed by different authors (Serge Carrère, Duf, Jean-Luc Loyer, Marco Giudice, Fawzi and Yann Madé), the album therefore retraces Fred’s chronological journey, evoking his passion, his work, without omit the difficulties he might encounter on a daily basis. His end of life is only evoked by a few words. An endearing and smiling portrait emerges which remains a little on the surface but which also makes it possible to raise more broadly the problem of the accompaniment of the handicapped people in their professional career. Because if Fred’s was “a sacred alignment of planets”in the words of a journalist, how many other disabled people have not had this chance…
The end of the album takes Spectra, the character created by Fred drawn by his fellow designers, but also presents the association L’Hippocampe which develops cultural actions in favor of the social and professional integration of people with disabilities as well as than the ESAT Image-Graphic Arts of Angoulême. The Hippocampe d’or 2023 were awarded on the occasion of the 50th Angoulême International Comics Festival. They are to be found ici.
