A 59-year-old in good faith lost 20,000 euros to telephone fraudsters. The man from Seewalchen (Bez. Vöcklabruck) had been called on August 3rd on his mobile phone by a stranger who pretended to be a software support employee.
He explained to the Upper Austrian that virus warnings appear on his laptop that urgently need to be resolved. The phone call lasted seven hours during which the fraudster stole the man’s trust.
The 59-year-old finally granted the caller remote access to his laptop. He was then asked not to turn off the computer at night, to open all installed programs and files, and to enter the access data for his mail account and online banking, which he then did.
It wasn’t until the following day, when he received another call in the morning, that the 59-year-old became suspicious and contacted his bank and the police. By then, 131 cash withdrawals had already been made from his current account.
