Fraud when buying cars online: how to avoid being a victim

In this regard, the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Mexico City (SSC) has warned about the proliferation of these scams through a video based on a real case reported to the authority. The SSC advises taking several precautions To avoid falling into this type of deception:

  • Be wary if the person with whom you agreed to the transaction does not appear at the indicated place.
  • Verify that any deposits you receive are available and transfer it immediately to another account.
  • Stay calm, if you are a victim of extortion, and collect all the data possible of the person who threatens you.
  • Never comply with the demands of criminals.
  • Report in case of emergency to the hotline for attention to cases of kidnapping and extortion from the SSC to 55-5242-5034.

A tragic case in Álvaro Obregón

The danger of carrying out car purchase transactions for internet was evident in a recent case in Lomas de Becerra neighborhoodin the mayor’s office Alvaro Obregonwhere a man was murdered after trying to buy a truck advertised in MarketPlace from Facebook.

The man, accompanied by his wife, arrived at the location to complete the purchase of the truck, carrying with him a quantity of 260 thousand pesos in cash. Upon arriving at the meeting point, he was intercepted by three criminals, who stripped him of his money and attacked him.

  • don’t share personal information sensitive through social networks.
  • Make the transaction in one place insurance and preferably with the presence of police.
  • Avoid carrying large sums of cash.
  • Verify the identity of the seller or buyer before making any type of payment.
