Fraternities in Graz Targeted by Vandalism Again: Police Investigating Property Damage Cases

The police are again reporting cases of property damage to two houses belonging to fraternities in Graz: On Tuesday night, unknown persons damaged house facades in Bergmanngasse and Halbärthgasse, opposite the Karl-Franzens University in Graz. The houses – one houses the Germania fraternity, the other (Wartburg) the “Academic Fraternity Allemannia Graz” – were thrown with red and black paint balls. In Bergmanngasse, the perpetrators also threw a glass bottle filled with red paint through the window of a student living there. At Germania, a glass bottle filled with paint was thrown through the window of a student living there, fortunately no one was injured.

Nobody was injured in the incidents. The Andritz Police Inspectorate is conducting the investigation. The amount of the damage is not yet known.

KFG offers 1000 euros for information, FPÖ criticizes vandalism

The last time there was a similar incident was in January 2022. Back then, the red paint thrown on the facade was bottled in small mason jars and Christmas baubles. The Styrian police reported that the sidewalk, a guest garden and the parked car of an uninvolved person were also damaged by the act.

The then Graz FPÖ club chairman Alexis Pascuttini (today KFG, corruption-free municipal council club) promised a bonus of a thousand euros with the FPÖ municipal council club at the time – but there was no success in the investigation. Nevertheless, he is doing it again now, as club chairman of the KFG: “This time, too, we are paying 1,000 euros per tip for tips that lead to the arrest of the perpetrators,” said Pascuttini, who condemned “this cowardly, politically motivated attack” in the strongest possible terms. The State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Terrorism must investigate here so that the perpetrators can be held accountable as soon as possible.

The chairman of the Ring of Freedom Students, Fabian Gutschreiter, also criticized the “presumably politically motivated vandalism attack” in the strongest possible terms. “It is unacceptable that students are no longer protected from left-wing extremist violence even in their own homes.” He suspects “personal and financial entanglements between left-of-centre parties and left-wing extremist organizations such as the Autonomous Antifa”. These urgently need to be addressed .
