But her adventure began in 2017, when she decided at the age of 21 to go to New York as an au pair. “After two months I met my current husband,” she says. After a brief return to Austria in September 2018, she moved across the pond again in early 2019 to see her boyfriend again. “I got a marriage proposal and stayed the same.”
She found the job at the UN through a job advertisement on the Internet. Now she works at the Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations as an administrative assistant for several diplomats.
“There are also a lot of representative visits from Vienna and we do a lot of events,” says Chariah, who also met ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen at work during their visits to New York .
“I’m proud and thankful every day that I’m part of the team,” she says. “What I miss from home is the friendliness. Many believe that Americans are nicer. But every day I get to be in a metropolis where others fly to on vacation.”
