Scuderia AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost has backed Liam Lawson to be on the F1 grid in 2025 after missing out on a full-time seat in 2024. Lawson, who accompanied Red Bull’s junior team as a substitute for the injured Daniel Ricciardo, suddenly appeared in five races of the 2023 season after Ricciardo broke his hand in Zandvoort.
Lawson returned to Suzuka to finish the Super Formula season. Lawson has spent much of the year fighting for the title in the highly competitive Super Formula, but in the end Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda will fill the AlphaTauri seat in 2024. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has previously said that despite Lawson missing out on a drive next season, he does not believe it will be the last time he sees Lawson in F1, with his retirement set for this year. AlphaTauri boss Tost also praised his work in replacing Ricciardo. Tost emphasized that not only did he have to take part at short notice, Lawson also had to learn first-hand the wet Pirelli tires, especially at Zandvoort. I had no experience with wet tires and intermediates until that weekend. “Liam has done a great job with us. Let’s not forget the circumstances when he first drove for us in Zandvoort. He wasn’t ready for them,” Tost said. said. “He just had to jump in the car. It was raining so he had to use full wet tires. He rode an F1 car with full wet tires and intermediate tires. “I think his highlight with us was when he finished 9th in Singapore.” “Singapore was an easy race. It’s not the road. He was competitive from the start, he didn’t make any mistakes, he deserves a seat in F1 and I hope he will be in F1 at least in 2025.”
