Düsseldorf The old building was in dire need of renovation and was replaced by a new one. Construction costs and construction time could be undercut.
After 15 months of construction – and thus six months earlier than planned – the replacement building for a branch of the Franz-Jürgens-Berufskolleg at Redinghovenstraße 20 was completed in January of this year and has now been officially opened by Mayor Stephan Keller. The city invested 17.9 million euros in the site. The originally estimated construction costs of 18.5 million euros were thus clearly undercut. The project was implemented by the municipal subsidiary Immobilien Projekt Management GmbH (IPM).

The four-storey new building consists of two L-angled bars that enclose a modern meeting and corridor area inside. The recessed entrance on the ground floor creates a covered area that is formed by the floors above. There is an open staircase in the core of the building, which enables direct access to the learning center and career counseling. The floors above have a glass cover so that all floors are supplied with daylight.

“In addition to the modern construction, the new building impresses with future-oriented and sustainable elements – especially in the area of technical equipment and energy supply,” says City Director Burkhard Hintzsche. The building was connected to the district heating network and the ecological heating is supplemented by a photovoltaic system.

The old, five-story school building at the same address was built in the 1960s and has not been completely renovated since then. It is slated to be demolished this year.
