When Renato (Luis Gerardo Mndez) travels to Chicago to say goodbye to his dying father, Evaristo (Jos Ziga), he meets an extravagant and unbearable young man named Asher (Connor del Ro), who turns out to be his stepbrother!
In Medios Hermanos, the film that opens in theaters next Thursday, entanglements and riddles are sown by Evaristo, who before passing to a better life prompts his children to meet and undertake a frantic journey to discover their identity and the reasons why he was forced to abandon Renato in Mexico.
For me it was a great experience. An adventure to see the coexistence and on set, I will even say that it was very inspiring. I am half Cuban and my heritage made me feel very attached. I loved that everyone spoke in Spanish and that everyone is so committed to this film that it is very funny and profound, Del Ro said in an interview.
I think the film is made to laugh, but it also seeks to open those conversations of the unspoken between father and children, particularly at a time like now, where people die, leave and there is no more. They leave without you asking the really important questions because we waste time talking about the turkey, the weather, the elections, added Mendez in the conversation.
Together in videoconference, the two actors remember how they entertain themselves, one with his already well-known Spanish and trying to teach the other a few words. In the end, they felt identified for various reasons.
Asher and Renato receive several envelopes with riddles that their father left them. The first takes it more lightly and the second infuriates.
He traveled from Mexico to discover why his father abandoned him as a child, and it even turns out that he has a new family and it is difficult for him to understand the mess. And if this happens to Renato in fiction, it happened to Luis Gerardo in real life when he discovered his half-sister.
It was incredibly personal, I have a half sister who is older than me, who I found out about seven years ago; my father confessed it to me after we had a few mezcals together.
And starting to develop the script, near the shooting, I had the need to contact her because before I had not been interested, I was very busy. My worldview was like, this woman existed before I was born, so it’s not my problem, says the actor from Club de Cuervos y Nosotros los Nobles.
Both Asher and the interlocutors pay attention to the story that the Mexican, who is the producer of the film, had said little about.
I contacted her, we did a Zoom. And it was very nice, because, like in the movie, I understood his point of view, his perspective on life, and then I understood his story better. I understand my father better, now I understand myself much better. It made me a healthier human being, without having so many cobwebs in my head, she shared about her sister, Adriana.
They dismantle prejudices
Directed by Luke Greenfield and written by Eduardo Cisneros and Ali LeRoi, the comedy also symbolizes for the protagonists a way of talking about prejudices between the inhabitants of Mexico and the United States, about fraternal coexistence and family values.
You realize the feeling for siblings, and you think about the differences and similarities, and you say no matter what they say, we have the same DNA and that seems invaluable to me.
They are the United States and Mexico, although we speak different languages, and have different food, music, there is something that unites us, and we can enjoy and complement each other. In the same language, Del Ro pointed out.
Asher and Renato set out on a journey with the aim of reaching the end, but they face so many setbacks that one of them gives up the adventure.
Between emotional pulls, the two agree to help each other, as Renato is going against the clock because his wedding is a few days away and he must return to Mexico on time. Let’s see if it succeeds.
PHRASE
The complex relationship that Asher has with his father is to take into account, it is something that continues to happen, I mean, even Steven Spielberg had a complex relationship with his father and that prompted him to create many stories. Open up the conversation to give it more weight and improve, and question everything.

PHRASE
I have been working on this project for five years, the first film I made with Focus Features in the US, which made great titles like Little Miss Sunshine, Eternal Radiance of a Mind Without Remembrance, and which defined me a lot in acting and set the course for me. where I wanted to go.
