“Explosion was deliberately caused”

The first witness statements and results of the fire investigators’ investigations are now available. “Based on the current state of the investigation, it can be assumed that the explosion was caused deliberately,” confirmed a spokesman for the Frankfurt police.

The younger man is said to have deliberately set the fire in front of the apartment in the Westend district using an accelerant and probably accidentally set himself on fire. An investigation for attempted murder has been launched against arsonist Gabriele R. The investigation is ongoing, although he died on Tuesday.

“Further clues and traces are still being evaluated, which could possibly point in a different direction regarding the cause of the fire and the course of events,” said the police spokesman.

The motive for the murder was apparently jealousy

But what drove him to commit this crazy act? At first, residents suspected that Gabriele R. was perhaps afraid of a rent increase or termination – and then “went crazy.”

Five days after the fire, however, it seems clear: it was jealousy! He knew full well that his brother was still in the apartment and is said to have announced the crime to friends. Further details are currently unclear.

While Gabriele tried to escape at the last second through the stairwell, Antonio climbed onto the roof. He waited there until the fire brigade got to him. Miraculously, he escaped with minor burns and was able to leave the hospital.
