After the terrorist attacks against Israel on October 7th of this year, various demonstrations and meetings took place in the city this Saturday (October 21st, 2023).
In this context, the Frankfurt police have prepared intensively for possible operational situations, taking into account the special challenge that different interests will clash.
The registered meetings were protected and trouble-free operations were ensured. All citizens were given the opportunity to participate and the associated basic rights to freedom of assembly and expression.
Today, particular attention was paid to the “Peace and Justice in the Middle East” rally, as a decision in this context was still pending from the Hessian Administrative Court (VGH) until shortly before the event began. After permission to hold the meeting was finally confirmed by the VGH, around 1,500 participants gathered on Opernplatz.
Isolated criminal offenses were identified by individual meeting participants, including on suspicion of incitement to hatred and depictions of violence, as well as administrative offenses in connection with the city of Frankfurt’s restriction order. The police took decisive action and punished the violations consistently.
The rally was peaceful overall and was ended by the leader of the meeting at around 5:20 p.m. It should also be mentioned that the leader of the meeting worked cooperatively with the police, who influenced the participants in accordance with the restriction order.
In addition, a demonstration with around 90 participants on the topic of “Solidarity with the civilian population in Palestine and Israel” began at 1:00 p.m. at the Hauptwache and ended at the Kaisersack. Furthermore, a demonstration on the topic “Hands off Niger – Defend Africa” with around 90 participants started at 3:00 p.m. on Kaiserstrasse and ended at Hauptwache. In the end, this and other events in the city took place peacefully and without disruption.
