Frankfurt now second, Freiburg loses 0:6

Europa League winner Eintracht Frankfurt is the first pursuer of leaders FC Bayern in the Bundesliga and has pushed FC Schalke 04 into even greater relegation troubles. The Hessians won 3-0 (1-0) against the tail light on Saturday and overtook the previous second SC Freiburg, who clearly lost 0-6 (0-3) at VfL Wolfsburg. 1. FC Union Berlin also overtook the Breisgauers with a 3-1 (0-1) deficit against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. The chasing trio is tied five points behind Bayern.

Coach returnee Bruno Labbadia came with his new, old club VfB Stuttgart to a 1:1 (1:1) against FSV Mainz 05, the Swabians occupy the relegation place 16. Meanwhile, VfL Bochum beat Hertha BSC with a 3:1 ( 2-0) in 17th place. In the evening, 1. FC Köln beat Werder Bremen 7-1 (5-1). Jesper Lindström (22nd minute) scored for Frankfurt and gave Schalke an even bigger task. The guests were not bad in the game up until then and afterwards, but substitute Rafael Borré (84th) and Aurélio Buta (90th + 1) decided the game in favor of the Hessians.

Patrick Wimmer (2nd) put Wolfsburg in the lead very early, Jonas Wind (28th and 37th) increased the half-time lead before the break, which was already promising. The game was decided at the latest after Yannick Gerhardt’s goal (56th). The sports club, which had played a very strong first half of the season up to that point, was disappointing and conceded the fifth and sixth goals against Ridle Baku (80′) and Luca Waldschmidt (90’+4/penalty kick).

Philipp Hofmann scored for Bochum in the 22nd minute before winter newcomer Keven Schlotterbeck (45th) scored Bochum’s second goal. Philipp Hofmann (56th) completed a counterattack to the next goal. VfL overtook three teams in the bottom half of the table with the win. Suat Serdar (87th) scored the consolation goal for Hertha.

Labbadia was initially able to celebrate Serhou Guirassy’s goal (36′) in Stuttgart, but the new coach also had to accept an equalizer from Marcus Ingvartsen (40′). The 56-year-old became VfB coach for the second time in mid-December, having coached Stuttgart between December 2010 and August 2013.

In Berlin, Jordan initially missed a hand penalty (25th) for the hosts. But Ihlas Bebou gave TSG the lead. Danilho Doekhi (73′ and 89′) turned the game around, his second goal came just before the end, before Jamie Leweling (90’+6) also completed a counterattack. (dpa)
