Frankfurt Introduces Weapons Ban Zone to Curb Knife Offenses in Bahnhofsviertel

Frankfurt/Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) – A weapons ban zone will be officially introduced in Frankfurt’s Bahnhofsviertel today. In the second-smallest district of the Main metropolis, carrying weapons in accordance with the Weapons Act as well as knives with fixed or lockable blades longer than four centimeters will be prohibited between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Mayor Mike Josef (SPD) and Head of Security Annette Rinn (FDP) will provide more detailed information at a press event in the morning (10.30 a.m.).

The mayor justified the corresponding magistrate decision with the tripling of knife offenses in the Bahnhofsviertel since 2019. The district is where the red light district, a party mile and an open drug scene come together. “If the weapons ban zone protects even one life, it is good,” Josef said when the weapons ban zone was announced. Every knife that might no longer be able to be used in the early hours of the morning when alcohol is advanced counts.

This is the second time such a zone has been introduced in Hesse. A weapons ban zone was introduced in the state capital Wiesbaden in 2019.
