A few months ago, Thomas Kösling, coach of the Frankfurt Galaxy football team, described Jakeb Sullivan as a “franchise quarterback”. Translated, this meant: Sullivan is the figurehead of the franchise and the team is formed around him. As of this week, that no longer applies. The Frankfurt Galaxy have announced that Sullivan will no longer be their quarterback in 2024. The franchise and its most important player parted ways amicably. The separation wasn’t that amicable. He made this “very hard and far-reaching decision,” says Kösling. Together, Kösling and Sullivan won the title in the European League of Football in 2021. Sullivan’s legacy is “outstanding,” says Kösling: “We will always be connected to him.”
One of the best quarterbacks
The separation after three years is surprising; Sullivan is statistically one of the best quarterbacks in the league. However, his development curve is pointing downwards; last season was his weakest. Less than 61 percent of his passes in the regular season reached a teammate; in the two previous years it was just under 66 percent. He was missing for weeks due to an injury and his rhythm suffered as a result. It is important for Kösling to emphasize that Sullivan met many of his expectations. But not enough anymore. The coach demands more leadership, a stronger drive to be successful. The quarterback was also “not happy with everything.” Sullivan could not be reached by the FAZ on Thursday. Jan Ehrhardt Published/Updated: Recommendations: 5 Johannes Müller Published/Updated: Published/Updated: Offensive coordinator Patrick Griesheimer will also no longer work for the Galaxy next season and his contract has not been extended. The reasons are similar to Sullivan’s, says Kösling. In doing so, the head coach is realigning the offensive “to create new stimuli and look for a new opportunity.” A new chance to defeat rival Rhein Fire, who dominated in 2023.
