Frankfurt: Café Wacker in Mittelweg in the Nordend becomes Café Ana

Many regular guests were sad when they heard that Café Wacker was closing in Mittelweg. But it continues. Only with a new name and boss.

  • Cafe Wacker in the Nordend is closing
  • after 25 years
  • It was over on Christmas Eve

Frankfurt – Everything has actually remained the same. Only the counter is new – and me, ”says Ana Hrskanovic and laughs. The 48-year-old is the new operator of the previous one Café Wacker in the Nordend. After 24 years, the Zülch family had decided to work behind the Wacker cafes stands to close its branch in Mittelweg on December 24th. The outer sign is still new: the brown lettering on a white background has remained the same, but instead of Café Wacker there is now Café Ana.

There is also Wacker’s coffee in the cup or as beans for the home, the same cake from a Wiesbaden pastry shop, breakfast with bread from the baker Hans and a lunch table. The rustic furnishings are the same as they used to be: “The regular guests wanted everything to stay the same,” says Hrskanovic. They just painted and renovated them.

The prices were almost the same. The cappuccino costs 2.40 euros, the piece of cake 3.80 euros. New to the daily menu is the Mexico burger with fries and jalapeños for € 9.70. “I’ll see how it goes with the guests.” Ana Hrskanovic celebrated the opening on Sunday. The café is also very busy on the following days. Many guests greet them with “Hello, Ana!”, Some even with kisses on the cheek.

Cafe Wacker: Hrskanovic is no stranger

Because Hrskanovic is no stranger. She worked for 25 years in the Café Wacker headquarters on Kornmarkt. “When I heard that the café in the Nordend should be closed, I immediately told my boss at the time: ‘I want to do it.’ She said that I was a brave woman.” Hrskanovic laughs. Her ex-boss Angelika Zülch-Busold also came to the opening.

Many of the regular guests from the Kornmarkt are also regular guests in the Nordend. No matter how stressful it is, she smiles. “I am naturally happy, and when I have something in mind, I go through with it,” she says. It is 4 p.m. and her first sitting break on that day is in the summer garden. It started at 7 a.m. “First I do all the preparations, then I have my breakfast in peace. And then the day can come. “

Cafe Wacker in Frankfurt: Off on Mittelweg

Ana Hrskanovic was born in Croatia and came to Frankfurt at the age of eight. After school, she trained as a beautician and hairdresser. “Actually, I only wanted to stay one year as a temporary assistant at Café Wacker on Kornmarkt. Then I stayed 25 years, ”she says. She had always dreamed of having her own café. Now that just happened perfectly. She is married and has three sons. They are 17, 25 and 28 years old. Her youngest son and daughter-in-law, the wife of their eldest son, take care of the café’s social media presence.

Her son Ivan (25) works in the café. She has nine employees. “I took over three from Café Wacker.” At Kornmarkt in the city center, which is more of a standing café, she always stood at the bar. “The queue was often long up to the parking garage across the street. So I asked what coffee the last customer in line wanted, ”she says and laughs.

Now she runs much more in the new café. “I don’t feel like a boss, I work in the same way.” When she’s in bed at night, she turns on the television. “I fall asleep immediately. I only get annoyed sometimes when I wake up and I don’t know who the killer was. ”
