Frankfurt am Main – SPD on the topic: Bridging aid for sex workers in the crisis

Stella Schulz-Nurtsch – women’s policy spokeswoman for the SPD parliamentary group.

Frankfurt am Main – The SPD parliamentary group in the Römer is pleased about the support of the other coalition parties in the fight against the inhumane living conditions of sex workers. In a joint application, the coalition demands state aid for sex workers in order to secure their economic existence in times of lockdown.

“I am pleased that our coalition colleagues are joining our call for more support for the weakest in our city. The so-called Laufhäuser in Frankfurt have been closed for months due to the pandemic. What is forgotten in this decision, however, are the fate associated with the closure of brothels and similar facilities, ”warns the SPD parliamentary group’s spokeswoman for women’s affairs, Stella Schulz-Nurtsch.

“Because this closure is equivalent to a professional ban. Those who work and often live in wholesalers are now penniless on the streets. Out of sheer necessity, more and more sex workers offer their services on the street, in green spaces, in dark parking lots or in other dangerous places. There they are exposed to violence and unreasonable hygienic conditions, ”explains the social democrat.

Sex workers would have to find other ways to earn a living. The current development forces these people into illegality and into an increased health and safety risk. A control of the pandemic is therefore also excluded. It shows again how important accompanying aid programs such as exit counseling, social workers, women’s shelters and opportunities for further training are in order to be able to get out of prostitution.

“As a parliamentary group, we have always advocated this and will continue to do so in the future. Anyone who was already on the fringes of society is now in danger of falling during the crisis. We mustn’t let it get that far, which is why we are clearly committed to bridging aid and transfer payments for sex workers, ”concluded Schulz-Nurtsch.
