Frankfurt Airport Resumes Take-Offs and Landings After Freezing Rain

The weather situation has now calmed down. Frankfurt Airport is allowing take-offs and landings again – at least for the time being.

The freezing rain in Frankfurt has been easing since Wednesday afternoon. Therefore, aircraft can occasionally take off from Frankfurt Airport. This should ease the situation somewhat with the available parking positions, according to a spokesman for the airport operator Fraport. However, everything still depends on the weather developments.

Frankfurt Airport: landings possible again

Landings are also planned again, as a Fraport spokeswoman said. On Wednesday afternoon, aircraft take-offs had to be temporarily suspended due to freezing rain. A Fraport spokesman reported that airport employees were no longer able to de-ice the machines safely due to the prolonged freezing rain.

Meanwhile, landings were still taking place. This meant that the parking positions gradually became full and the original plan was not to allow any more landings from 3 p.m. Hundreds of flights at Frankfurt Airport were canceled in advance.

The German Weather Service in Offenbach issued the highest severe weather warning level for parts of Hesse and other regions of Germany on Wednesday due to the extreme risk of black ice.
