Frank Vogel named new head coach of Phoenix Suns

After the arrivals of Monty Williams in Detroit and Nick Nurse in Philadelphia this week, Phoenix has just decided on the identity of its new coach. Rest assured Suns fans, it won’t be Doc Rivers, but Frank Vogel.

Franky is back!

Almost three weeks after clearing Monty Williams from the bench, the Suns therefore decided to bet on Vogel, the latter finding a coaching position a year after the end of his adventure with the Lakers. The news was announced by Shams Charania from The Athletic.

We would go on a long-term deal of $31 million over 5 years, proof that the Cactus really believe in his ability to take the team to the top. In any case, this is what Franky will be judged on, he who has already won a title with the Lakers of LeBron James and Anthony Davis in the Orlando bubble in 2020. With Devin Booker and Kevin Durant now under his command, Vogel will have to find the right formula to maximize a Phoenix team that fell in the second round of the Playoffs this year, and weighed down by a rather glaring lack of depth .

This will be the fourth team for Frank Vogel, who began his career as a coach with Indiana, with whom he notably participated in two Eastern Conference Finals between 2011 and 2016, under the impetus of a young Paul George and with a formidable defense. Frank then went through Orlando (2016-18) and therefore the Lakers (2019-22).

Frank Vogel, NBA champion with the Lakers in 2020 in the bubble, back on an NBA bench!

The absence will have been short-lived, the challenge on the other hand is sizeable: to lead these Suns to the title, with several changes to be expected this summer in the workforce!

At work !

Vogel’s experience and his ring won in 2020 arguably made the difference in his favor, with the Suns favoring him over assistant coaches like Jordi Fernandez (Kings) and Kevin Young (Suns). With the departure of Nick Nurse – another candidate – to Philadelphia a few days ago and the decision of Doc Rivers to withdraw his candidacy, Vogel has naturally become the man for the job in the eyes of new owner Mat Ishbia.

It’s up to Franky to prove that the right decision was made.
