The bullet is through the church: Frank Lampard returns for a while as manager at Chelsea. The club icon will start working as ‘Caretaker’ at Stamford Bridge following the sacking of Graham Potter.
Lampard’s return to Chelsea is certainly striking. The former midfielder was evicted by the club two years ago, while he recently had to pack his bags at relegation candidate Everton. However, Potter was also recently sacked by Chelsea, who were keen to appoint an interim manager for the rest of the season. In this way, The Blues can already look at a coach who can join from the start of next season.
Chelsea will play nine more Premier League matches this season, which will therefore be led by Lampard. However, the team from London is disappointingly eleventh in the ranking, making it difficult to reach European football. The most important posters are therefore waiting for Lampard and associates in the Champions League. Real Madrid will be the opponent in the quarterfinals of the billion dollar ball in a week.
Antonio Conte, Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique have been named as candidates to take over from Lampard after this season. Chelsea has already made contact with the trio, but there is certainly no definite decision yet on who will be working with them definitively.
Lampard was appointed to Chelsea in the summer of 2019, as the club faced a transfer ban. The former England international gave talents such as Reece James, Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori the chance in his team. A season later, Lampard brought Hakim Ziyech to the club, but not much later the manager was fired.
