François Bayrou Criticizes French Government for Parisian Dominance: 11 out of 14 Ministers from Paris or Île-de-France

This is one of the criticisms addressed by François Bayrou to the executive and which illustrates what he calls “the constant rupture between the base and the powers”: 11 Parisian or Ile-de-France ministers out of the 14 who make up the government.

We actually count six ministers born in Paris or Île-de-France : Aurore Bergé, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra and Marc Fesneau were born in Paris, Bruno Le Maire in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Sébastien Lecornu in Eaubonne (Val d’Oise) and Stéphane Séjourné in Versailles.

We can add Prisca Thevenotborn in Strasbourg but whose parents moved to the Paris region when she was two years old, a region she would never leave.

Marie Lebec, born in Eure but who followed a good part of her schooling in private Catholic establishments in Yvelines before joining the UMP in the department. Only a school experience in England kept him away from the region.

Sylvie Retailleauwho comes from civil society but who spent a very large part of her career in universities in Ile-de-France, can also be part of what Bayrou calls “France” ministers.

Six ministers with a “local anchor”

On the other hand, Catherine Vautrin was born in Reims, where she was president of the Métropole, Sébastien Lecornu was born in Île-de-France but was president of the departmental council of Eure, which can remove the label of “France” minister. Gérald Darmanin had several mandates in the North including that of mayor of Tourcoing and Christophe Béchu was mayor of Angers for 8 years.

Despite her image, Rachida Dati was born in Saône-et-Loire and only arrived in Paris at the age of 23, for a degree in Assas. Finally, born in the North, Éric Dupond-Moretti was registered as a lawyer at the Lille bar for a long time before registering with the Paris bar in 2016.
