Franco Bernabè Discusses Italy’s Economic Situation and Political Fibrillations: Interview on 13 September Edition of Otto e Mezzo

Franco Bernabè, president of the Italian national commission for UNESCO, is a guest on the 13 September edition of Otto e mezzo, La7’s pre-evening talk show hosted by Lilli Gruber. The journalist asks about the migrants, the maneuver, the tax on banks’ extra profits, the Pnrr, underlining that Giorgia Meloni and Matteo Salvini attack Europe. “What is your assessment of the Meloni government?” the question posed to the number one of Acciaierie d’Italia, who responds as follows: “Until the beginning of September the balance was positive. The spread had fallen from 240 to 170, the markets were calm, the government did not make any major mistakes. At an international level it is accredited as a reliable partner of the United States and Europe. At the beginning of September the self-generated political fibrillations within the majority began, there was no reason to exasperate the political debate as it is exasperating in recent days, with all these controversies”.

“And the spread – highlights Bernabè – has started to increase, with a growing trend. Exasperating the situation and presenting a situation as if it were dramatic is not in the government’s interest first of all. Italy is entering a phase of economic weakness that is much more solid than it was between 2008 and 2011. Businesses have the lowest level of debt for 20-30 years. Banks have the highest level of capitalization and the lowest level of non-performing loans ever. Households are penalized by inflation, but have the lowest debt levels in Europe. The State is in debt, there are undoubtedly problems. Italy shows signs of growth in a difficult international context, but is in a much more structurally solid situation than other countries. Presenting a situation as if it were tragic and giving negative messages is not convenient for the head of government, it is not convenient – Bernabè comments – first of all for the solidity of his own coalition”.
