Francis Vrancken will soon say goodbye as chairman of Beerschot, but he still addressed the people at the ceremony in the Antwerp town hall. With a nod to rival Antwerp and a clear message for main shareholder United World.

“As outgoing chairman, I think it is a fantastic honor to be here with the entire Beerschot family. My incredible thanks to the city council for giving us the opportunity to celebrate our championship in such an iconic place. We do not look askance at the mayor. With a grateful look,” Vrancken laughingly referred to the speech by Antwerp chairman Paul Gheysens, at the same place a year ago.

“I would like to dedicate this title to three groups in particular,” he continued. “First of all, our countless volunteers. Day in, day out they show their passion and club love for Beerschot. Secondly, our youth players, coaches, and manager Davy De Smedt. In difficult circumstances, with few resources, they are still among the top in the country. They achieve great results at home and abroad. All parents should be extremely proud. Last but not least, our supporters. They set the tone at every trip, at home we always competed with twelve. You are Beerschot.”

The current situation with United World, which even caused Francis Vrancken to step down as chairman, was saved for the end of the speech. “Finally, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the uncertain future of our club. There is a need for planning. On short-term investments. The work must start now. The challenge is enormous and time is running out. I count on the majority shareholder, United World, to take responsibility. It has to happen now. Beerschot is the team of the city!”
