China News Agency, United Nations, September 5th (Reporter Wang Fan) The 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly closed at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on the 5th. On the same day, the 78th session of the UN General Assembly opened, Francis, a diplomat from Trinidad and Tobago, officially took office as the chairman of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
On the same day, Francis took over the gavel of the UN General Assembly from the 77th President of the UN General Assembly Kresch. At the opening meeting of the new session of the UN General Assembly, Francis emphasized four key priorities in his speech – peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability, and called on the international community to step up the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Francis pointed out that the complex challenges facing the world today, including climate change, conflict and poverty, make peace more difficult to achieve, while geopolitical divisions increase instability and raise doubts about multilateralism. As the main decision-making body of the United Nations, the General Assembly has a special responsibility to ensure that relevant efforts are rooted in a strong multilateral system and faithful to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
Amina, Deputy Secretary-General of the UN Standing Committee, spoke on behalf of UN Secretary-General Guterres, thanking Kresch for his excellent leadership of the UNGA over the past year. As we continue to seek multilateral cooperation, the new UNGA President Francis brings skills , experience, knowledge and wisdom will be crucial. She called on Member States to build trust, solidarity and cohesion to take action to address challenges and develop solutions that we all aspire to “towards a better, more peaceful, more prosperous future and a healthier planet”.
The General Assembly is the main deliberative, supervisory and review body of the United Nations, composed of all member states of the United Nations. From September to December every year, the General Assembly will hold regular sessions. The regular session is usually divided into two stages, the first part is the general debate, and the second part is the deliberation of the agenda items by the General Assembly. The general debate of the current session of the UN General Assembly will start on September 19 and end on September 26.
