Francis: “Singapore is a perfect example of what humanity can achieve”

During a meeting with representatives of the authorities, civil society and the diplomatic corps at the University Cultural Centre Theatre, Pope Francis recalled that Singapore is a place where different nations meet.

Francis referred to Singapore’s ethnic, cultural and religious diversity and stressed that “mutual respect, cooperation, dialogue and freedom to profess one’s beliefs, in fidelity to universal law, are the decisive conditions for Singapore’s success and stability, a requirement for balanced and lasting development, free from conflict and chaos.”

Francis recalled the contribution of the Catholic Church to the development of the city-state, especially through charitable work and the promotion of interreligious and ecumenical dialogue. Francis highlighted Singapore’s role in the international arena and encouraged “to continue working for the unity and fraternity of humanity.” He also pointed to the need to promote the family, so that it transmits values ​​”that give shape and meaning to life, and teach young people to create strong and healthy relationships.”
