During a meeting with representatives of the authorities, civil society and the diplomatic corps at the University Cultural Centre Theatre, Pope Francis recalled that Singapore is a place where different nations meet.

Francis referred to Singapore’s ethnic, cultural and religious diversity and stressed that “mutual respect, cooperation, dialogue and freedom to profess one’s beliefs, in fidelity to universal law, are the decisive conditions for Singapore’s success and stability, a requirement for balanced and lasting development, free from conflict and chaos.”
Francis on his trip to Singapore: “my goal is to strengthen Catholics in their faith”
Francis recalled the contribution of the Catholic Church to the development of the city-state, especially through charitable work and the promotion of interreligious and ecumenical dialogue. He said the purpose of his trip to Singapore was “to strengthen Catholics in their faith and encourage them to continue to work with joy and dedication with all men and women of good will to build a healthy and cohesive civil society, for the common good and for the crystal clear witness of their faith.”
Francis highlighted Singapore’s role in the international arena and encouraged “to continue working for the unity and fraternity of humanity.” He also pointed to the need to promote the family, so that it transmits values ”that give shape and meaning to life, and teach young people to create strong and healthy relationships.”

Francis also drew attention to the environmental crisis and encouraged “the commitment of capital, technology and talent, resources that can be a driving force for innovation, to take care of our common home.”
Singapore is a shining example of what humanity can achieve when we work together in harmony, with a sense of responsibility, and in a spirit of inclusiveness and fraternity. I encourage you to continue on this path, trusting in the promise of God and His fatherly love for all. – said Francis.

The Pope concluded his speech to the authorities with the wish: “May God help you to respond to the needs and expectations of your people and make you experience that with those who remain humble and grateful, He can accomplish great things for the good of all. May God bless Singapore!”
