Francis Paniego’s dishes, stars of the premiere of Masterchef Celebrity

The television season has already begun and many of the most iconic programmes on the small screen have already started their broadcasts. One of those that has returned is Masterchef Celebrity, which started this Monday with a programme starring, in its first test, Riojan gastronomy. Not in vain, Francis Paniego went to the set of the Televisión Española programme with a challenge for the contestants: to replicate “the most representative dishes” of Echaurren Tradición.

Before turning on the stove, the Riojan chef, a regular guest on the show, gave advice to the celebrities, some of whom had little experience in cooking (or at least that’s what they claimed). “Whenever a thousand doubts assail me, I start cleaning and you immediately get back in shape,” he told them. Words that Pocholo Martínez-Bordiu seemed to take literally, since he spent a good part of the cooking polishing his space.

After the introductions, it was time to assign the dishes. Echaurren himself was in charge of dividing up: Marisa’s croquettes for Cristina Cifuentes, dry rice with mushrooms and deer for Pitingo, meatballs with truffle for the ‘influencer’ Marina Rivers, lamb legs for the designer Pelayo Díaz, the creamy chocolate cake for half of Gomaespuma, Juan Luis Cano… Everyone got to work, some with more optimism than others.

An hour and a quarter. That was the time they had to cook and the clock started counting down the minutes. Nerves, the first cuts, the pots roaring… The programme had started, there was no time for regrets and Paniego’s dishes had to come out. Meanwhile, the Riojan went from place to place helping the contestants, sometimes more than the judges allowed him, and showing himself to be nervous when some preparation was not going well. So much so that before beginning the final tasting, Jordi Cruz gave him a linden tea to calm him down.

The 75 minutes had passed and it was time to try the dishes. Some were very far from what was ordered and the performers Itziar Miranda, José Lamuño, Rubén Ochandiano and Nerea Garmendia were the worst in the test. On the other side of the coin were Juan Luis Cano, Inés Hernand, Cristina Cifuentes, Raúl Gómez and Hiba Abouk. They made the best preparations of the night and between Gómez’s glazed pig’s ear with carrot gazpachuelo and Abouk’s lamb in sauce the winner was going to emerge.

Finally, the recognition went to the actress, who was able to donate 4,000 euros to the NGO of her choice. She was the best at preparing the dishes for Paniego and his family. She was the winner with Riojan gastronomy.
