Mameli’s anthem resounds again on the MotoGP podium thanks to Francesco Bagnaia’s victory with the official Ducati in the Indonesian GP. A success achieved thanks to an extraordinary comeback from 13th starting position which brought the reigning world champion back to the top of the standings, with an immediate counter-overtaking on Jorge Martin. The Spaniard paid dearly for an excess of enthusiasm, slipping to the ground while leading the race and leaving the way clear for Bagnaia, who completed his work by overtaking Maverick Vinales in the final laps, second at the finish line with the Aprilia.
A rediscovered Fabio Quartararo also gets on the podium with Yamaha, but Italy can also rejoice for the fourth and fifth places of Fabio Di Giannantonio and Marco Bezzecchi, just back from surgery after a broken collarbone. The start of the race said a lot about what would happen, with Martin starting from sixth place and immediately taking the lead, also burning out Luca Marini who was in pole position. From the rear, Bagnaia did not stand by and began his comeback from the first corner, immediately moving close to the leading group.
“Starting from thirteenth place made me say ‘give it your all’ – explained the Piedmontese -. I saw Martin go away and I thought about managing the tyres. It went well, in the last ten laps I was going really fast. I think I can we deserved a match like this.” After yesterday’s disappointing sprint, with eighth place and the leadership passed to Martin, the world champion managed to react as best he could, decisively but also with caution. The one that the Spaniard of Ducati Pramac didn’t have, who found himself on the ground around halfway through the race when he had a handful of seconds ahead of Vinales and Bagnaia, who in a few laps took the lead of the race to aim, wisely, at the finish.
Many riders, including once again Marc Marquez, paid for a general difficulty in tire management with crashes and consequent retirements, while Marini was put out of action by Brad Binder, who was very aggressive on the track so much so that he deserved two ‘long lap penalties’ ‘. The South African still finished sixth and remains fourth in the world rankings but far from Bezzecchi, third with 283 points. The fight for the title, five races from the end of the world championship, is however reserved for Bagnaia, who has 346 points, and Martin, who has slipped to -18. The wind now seems in favor of the Italian, who has achieved his sixth victory of the season, underlined by the president of Coni, Giovanni Malagò: “Crazy comeback and a screaming victory for a great Bagnaia. A special success that is once again worth leadership. Congratulations Pecco, thank you for these incredible emotions!”.
The challenge with Marti, however, is far from over. “I made a bad mistake and I had to be more careful – said the Spaniard -, but I know that today, like yesterday, no one could beat me. So I think that in general we are stronger and I’m optimistic.” the next race, in a week, will be on the spectacular stage of Phillip Island, where Vinales also promises to have his say. “Today I rode very well, controlling the tires but Pecco was faster – said the Spaniard from Aprilia -, I’m very satisfied with second place. We want to repeat ourselves in Australia”.
