Attal is currently the country’s education minister and takes over from Élisabeth Borne, who announced her resignation on Monday.
French media have previously reported on impending reshuffles in President Emmanuel Macron’s government and Borne was among those expected to resign.
An official announcement from the presidential office is expected later Tuesday.
Emmanuel Macron was 39 when he became France’s youngest president.
Attal and Macron are close allies, and in opinion polls the newcomer is one of France’s most popular politicians. He became particularly well known during the corona pandemic when he was a spokesperson for the government.
Macron’s changes are not expected to lead to major changes in policy, but many believe it could be a vitamin injection before the elections to the EU Parliament in June.
– The duo Macron and Attal can bring new life to the government, says Jean-Daniel Levy at the analysis company Harris Interactive.
Macron’s party, RE, is currently trailing the far-right party of his rival Marine Le Pen in the polls. Le Pen’s party has a lead of between 8 and 10 percentage points
