It will be a bitter night for the American Frances Tiafoe (No. 20 in the ATP rankings), as he lost to his compatriot Taylor Fritz by 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 and 6-1 and was eliminated in the semi-finals of the US Open.
After the match, he lamented his defeat at a press conference: “This is going to hurt a lot. Tonight I thought he was the best player, without a doubt. But then in the fourth set, I had some cramps. I felt like my body was starting to shut down. “I don’t know, it probably had a lot to do with nerves. I tried to give it my all in the fifth set. Sometimes it’s not meant to be that way.”
Despite being visibly sad and disappointed, he took a moment to congratulate his rival: “I have to take my hat off to Taylor (Fritz). He hung in there, he competed, he deserved it tonight. All the best to him in the final.”

However, the 26-year-old knows that he will have to turn the page and is already preparing for what is to come: “I’m going to try to finish the year strong. I’m going to Asia, I’m going to do everything the right way. I’m also going to compete at the Laver Cup. I’m going to let it hurt, but I’m going to learn from it. I’m going to work very hard.”
The good news for Tiafoe is that after a tough season with less than favorable results, he regained his best form in New York, allowing him to climb four spots in the rankings to No. 16 in the world.
