“France will not receive migrants from Lampedusa,” the minister told French TV channel TF1.
He said that France wants to take a firm position. Irregular migration exists in France and Italy, as well as across Europe, and must be fought, Darmanen said.
According to him, France has offered Italy help in repatriating people to countries with which Paris has good diplomatic relations. About 60% of the migrants who have arrived in Lampedusa are French-speaking, the minister said.
The small island of Lampedusa, located between Sicily and North Africa, has seen thousands of migrants arrive by boat in a matter of days. In Lampedusa, the migrant reception center set up earlier is overcrowded.
Thousands of migrants were taken from Lampedusa to Sicily or directly to the Italian mainland by ferries and police boats to ease migration pressure.
