France’s President Macron’s Plan for Extensive Tax Exemptions for International Sports Associations Overturned by Constitutional Council

In France, President Emmanuel Macron’s government’s plans for extensive tax exemptions for international sports associations have been overturned by the Constitutional Council! The country’s highest administrative court ruled before the turn of the year that the tax relief provided for in the 2024 budget violated the principle of equality.

Numerous politicians appealed to the Constitutional Council after the Senate had already vetoed the tax relief in November. These should in particular persuade the world football association FIFA to move from Zurich to Paris, reported the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

In 2021, FIFA opened a branch in the Hôtel de la Marine in Paris. The world association was founded in Paris in 1904 and moved to its current headquarters in Zurich in 1932. Officially, FIFA in the French capital wants to improve its connections to the French-speaking football world, but also to institutions such as UNESCO – the cultural organization of the United Nations.

Want to move without tax relief?
It remains to be seen whether possible relocation considerations will continue, even if France does not become a tax haven for leading international associations.

In the year of the Olympic Games in Paris this summer, President Macron wanted to make the country attractive to top associations. The plan was to exempt associations like FIFA from corporate tax and other taxes. Employees residing in France should also be exempt from income tax for five years.
