Above the nuclear pool, Stéphanie Gaiffe, director of Orano La Hague, explains to ministers Bruno Le Maire and Roland Lescure how the storage cycle works. “ Two out of three fuels recycled in the world over the past sixty years have been recycled here in the Hague, explains the director of Orano La Hague. It’s a telling figure…”

New cycle

In 1966, the construction of the factory in La Hague (Manche) marked the start of major national nuclear projects. Then there would be the conquest of space, high-speed trains or aeronautics.

This Thursday, March 7, 2024, in the Hague, Bruno Le Maire came to affirm that the time for these major projects had returned. And ensure, in “ this great industrial country » what is France, that nuclear power will occupy a power station there, a little less than two years after Emmanuel Macron’s Belfort speech.

Last week, at the Élysée, a nuclear policy council approved the cycle closure strategy and announced significant investments at the Orano La Hague plant.

This strategic decision for France opens decades of activities for the La Hague and Orano site.

Such a commitment places France in the very long term and, in fact, strengthens two major projects for the sector. Firstly, the sustainability and resilience of current factories. On the other hand, renewal of facilities, and if applicable with what technology. “A new page in French nuclear history will open. »

The minister announced that the lifespan of the reprocessing and recycling plants in La Hague and Melox (Gard) will be extended “beyond 2040”. The result is a real load plan for La Hague.

This is absolutely essential for the 5,700 people who work on the site. This will then open up prospects for recruitment, training, qualifications, etc.

Each year, more than 1,000 tonnes of spent fuel are recovered, this saves up to 20% of natural uranium and this could even go further by considering multi-recycling.

Two studies will be launched

The Minister of the Economy promises to launch studies for the construction of two new factories in La Hague: one for the production of mox fuel and a second for reprocessing and recycling by 2045-2050. Orano will have to clarify the contours.

“This will allow us to ultimately reduce uranium consumption by 25% in France, this will allow us to reduce the volume of final waste by around 75%which is good for the environment, and this will obviously lead to the creation of thousands of qualified jobs in France,” argues Bruno Le Maire.

“Considerable figures”

Strong announcements, so but no encryption for the moment. It remains to be seen, in fact, the amounts that will be committed and by what deadlines.

The unit of account in nuclear activity is ten billion euros. We know that these are very heavy investments. It takes approximately twenty-four months for the studies to be completed. We will work actively on the question of financing, and the best financing modalities. These are absolutely considerable figures. The Hague has a magnificent future.
