France’s budget deficit has reached historic levels

According to figures released this Wednesday, February 3, by the government, the state recorded a budget deficit history of 178 billion in 2020.

Unheard of since the post-war period, when successive governments stopped balancing the state accounts for the first time in 1975, then chronically from 1981.

Strong decline in revenue

The crisis linked to Covid This largely explains this surge compared to the 92.6 billion deficit in 2019: 17.8 billion was paid for partial unemployment and 11.8 billion for the business support fund. Staff costs increased by 2 billion.

Revenues, they fell by 25 billion compared to 2019, with 12.2 billion lost in VAT, 11.9 in corporate taxes (the rate of which is lowered) and 5.7 in fuel taxes. For 2021, the deficit is already estimated at 173.3 billion.
