France temporarily withdraws from NATO’s Mediterranean operation due to NATO colleague Turkey’s appearance in Libya.
“We have decided to temporarily withdraw from NATO’s security operation in the Mediterranean, the Sea Guardian,” a French defense spokesman said on Wednesday.
He said that France would stay away from the joint operation until they have answered their concerns about the increased maritime conflict between French and Turkish naval forces outside Libya.
France accuses Turkey of repeatedly violating the UN arms embargo on Libya. The conflict peaked last week when Turkish warships were aiming for a French naval vessel to investigate a Turkish ship on its way to Libya.
