France beat England 2-1, after Olivier Giroud scored a late header and striker Harry Kane missed a penalty, at the end of Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final in Qatar.
Midfielder Aurelien Tchoamene opened the scoring for France with a great shot in the 17th minute, and Kane equalized from a penalty in the 54th minute, after his team-mate Bukayo Saka was fouled by Tchoameni inside the ‘area.
Giroud scored with a close-range header from Antoine Griezmann’s cross, to restore France’s lead in the 78th minute.
Kane had another chance to equalise, after the referee awarded a penalty for a foul on substitute Mason Mount, but the England captain tapped the ball overhead six minutes before full time in front of to over 68,000 spectators.
France play in the semi-final on Wednesday against Morocco, who stunned Portugal by winning 1-0 to become the first Arab and African team to reach the golden square in the competition’s history.
In the other semifinal, Argentina will face Croatia.
