France wins farewell to the European Championship: Strong Austrians call for DHB team

The co-host is in impressive form, with three wins from three games, Austria moves into the main round of the European Handball Championship and meets the DHB team there. Slovenia also achieves this, while France at least manages to achieve a conciliatory conclusion.

Austria confidently reached the main round of the European Handball Championship and is the third opponent of the German national team there. The co-host of the final round of Bundesliga professionals Robert Weber (SG Nordhorn-Lingen / 7 goals) and Nikola Bilyk (THW Kiel / 6) celebrated their third win in the third game with 32:28 (18:12) against North Macedonia and takes 2: 0 points in the next tournament phase. The runner-up in Group B will also meet Germany in the main round to play this ticket in the evening Czech Republic and Ukraine. While the Czech Republic would be enough to draw, the Ukrainians need a win to advance after two narrow defeats.

In Group F, the team from Slovenia, supervised by former Flensburg coach Ljubomir Vranjes, also took their third win in the third game and thus the group win. The third World Cup winner of 2017 won in Gothenburg against Switzerland with 29:25 (16:10) and will therefore start in the second main round group.

Still a win for France

France is at least not going home without a win: The three-time world champion and third in the European Championship from 2018, whose end had already been determined, scored the first success at 31:23 (14:13) against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Trondheim. Valentin Porte from Montpellier HB was the best thrower with seven goals. The German team of coach Christian Prokop will play against Belarus at the start of the second tournament phase on Thursday, followed by the duels with Croatia (Saturday) and Austria (Monday). On Wednesday next week it will be against the Czech Republic or Ukraine.

Like defending champion Spain and ex-world champion Croatia, Austria also starts the main round with two points. Germany, on the other hand, starts like the rest of the group rivals without a point: from the group phase, only those points are taken that were earned against opponents who were also qualified for the main round. Germany clearly lost to Spain with 26:33 (11:14).
