France will offer additional doses of Covid-19 vaccine to fully vaccinated elderly and at-risk people from September, French President Emanuel Macron said on Thursday.
“Yes, we will probably need a third dose, not all at once, but in any case for the elderly and the most vulnerable,” said Macron.
As early as July, the president announced that people who were the first to be vaccinated, mostly people over the age of 80 and people with serious health problems, would be offered a third dose of Covid-19 vaccine.
Currently, the third dose in France is only available to people with a weakened immune system.
The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday called on countries to establish a moratorium on additional doses of Covid-19 vaccine for people who have already been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 by at least the end of September.
The organization explained that such a ban was necessary to ensure a more equitable distribution of vaccines between rich and poor countries.
Israel has already started offering a third dose of the vaccine to people over the age of 60, and Germany announced last week that it will also start offering additional doses from September.
