France will have Europe’s largest lithium mine by 2027

Since 1850, the site in the Allier (Auvergne) where lithium is to be exploited is a quarry where kaolin is excavated for the production of paper or porcelain. Imerys bought the mine in 2005 and now wants to invest more than one billion euros. The project would also create around 1,000 direct and indirect jobs in the area. These are works in the mine, but also in a nearby factory where the raw material is processed.

France also wants to create a legal framework that pays more attention to the social, ethical and environmental aspects involved in the exploitation of lithium.
