With effect from 9 August, France will also make the so-called health card mandatory for the catering industry, large shopping centers, hospitals, retirement homes, care institutions and public transport over long distances. This pass shows that the holder has been fully vaccinated, has recently recovered from Covid-19 or has tested negative for the coronavirus.
The pass must already be shown in cinemas, museums and other cultural institutions since July 21. The law allowing the expansion of the sites was approved by parliament last week. The pass may become mandatory in more places at a later date.
French people can put the health card on their smartphone. Dutch people do not have to download it. They can use the EU-recognized CoronaCheck app.
Demonstrations
The pass and a vaccination obligation for healthcare personnel led to large demonstrations in recent weekends. Protesters are angry at President Emmanuel Macron’s policy of giving vaccinated people more freedoms.
He wants to motivate French people to vaccinate. His government sees corona vaccines as the best weapon against corona. Macron calls the fact that some people do not want a vaccine “irresponsible and selfish”. Half of the population has already been fully vaccinated.
