France tightens: corona pass is now also mandatory in these places

What is the corona pass?

With the French coronapas or ‘pass sanitaire’, French residents can prove that they:

• have been fully vaccinated with an EU approved vaccine (after 7 days, 28 days at J&J)

• have taken a negative PCR or antigen test in the last 72 hours

• have recovered from a Covid-19 infection in the last six months.

With the corona pass it should be possible to reopen parts of the country without increasing the risk of spreading the corona virus. The pass can consist of paper proof, but can also be found digitally in the TousAntiCovid application – similar to the CovidSafe app with us.

Where is this mandatory?

Since the end of July, French residents have already needed a corona pass to access cinemas, nightclubs, casinos, libraries, theater halls, museums, amusement parks, sports centers, concerts, hotels, and department stores and shopping centers larger than 20,000 m².

As of today (09/08) the use of the ‘pass sanitaire’ will be extended. In addition to the previously mentioned places, the French must now also display the corona pass at cafes and restaurants (also on the terraces), residential care centers, medical facilities (with the exception of emergency care), expos and long-distance transport (plane, train, night bus).

Who is this mandatory for?

The rules apply to everyone over the age of 12, and will be in effect until November 15 at least. Anyone who does not respect the corona pass risks a fine of 135 euros.

The sanitary pass is also mandatory for travelers. Belgians those traveling to France can simply show the QR code of their proof in question via the CovidSafe app.

How does the population (and the constitutional court) react?

There have been massive demonstrations in France against the tightening for four weekends in a row. Last Saturday, about 237,000 people were said to have taken to the streets across the country. But the constitutional court gave the green light on Friday, because the measures would not violate the constitution, but are a reasonable result of a necessary trade-off between public health and fundamental rights.

The court then torpedoed the possibility that healthcare workers who refuse to be vaccinated and do not want to show a negative test can be fired. They are suspended. The measures will apply at least until November 15.
