France threatens to veto EU – UK agreement / Article / LSM.lv

France could veto the EU-EU agreement if it does not meet Paris’s requirements. The French Minister of State for European Affairs, Clement Bonn, announced this on Friday, December 4.

He warned that there was a risk of not concluding the agreement at all and should be ready for it.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman, Stephen Zeibert, said on Friday that Europe was “ready to reach an agreement with Britain, but not at any cost”. He explained that there are undoubtedly red lines, but there is always room for compromise.

The British government, on the other hand, acknowledged on Friday that the post-Brexit talks with the EU have reached a difficult point.

It has stated that it will not accept an agreement that would undermine British sovereignty.

Such statements come at a time when Brussels and London are still trying to resolve three key issues: fishing rights, compliance with bloc standards and the management of the agreement.

CONTEXT:

United Kingdom on 31 January 2020 formally left EU, but there is a transitional period until the end of the year, during which the British will continue to be subject to all EU rules.

An EU-UK trade agreement should be concluded by the end of 2020. If this fails, both sides will start trading under the rules of the World Trade Organization, which provide for significant customs duties on many goods and other barriers to trade.
