In the Netherlands too
Annemiek Nap, professor of reproductive medicine at Radboudumc and an expert in the field of endometriosis, also sees that it is not just a French problem. “This is a major problem worldwide. From the first grades, it takes between 5 and 12 years to be diagnosed with endometriosis.”
She sees that in the Netherlands, too, GPs and gynaecologists still too often fail to link a common symptom such as abdominal pain to the possibility of endometriosis. That is why Radboudumc is now investigating how the link with endometriosis can be made more quickly.
But more research will require funding. “I think that subsidy providers are insufficiently aware of the benefits that can be gained by being able to help women – who do not die from the disease, but are greatly hindered by it. It becomes less of a chronic disease, so costs less. But more importantly: women can work fully and contribute economically. In addition, it is of course nicer to live without structural pain.”
