In late June and early July, France reportedly experienced violent riots and mayhem, sparked by the death of a 17-year-old Arab teenager after being shot by a police officer.
The teenager refused to stop his car at the request of the police and tried to run away.
The mother of a gunned-down teenager has called for a demonstration planned for Sunday afternoon in Nanterre after authorities released the police officer accused of her son’s murder from custody on Wednesday.
“I will fight for my son, I will not give up,” the woman said in a video posted on Thursday evening, claiming that the release of the police officer was “a true injustice.”
The 38-year-old policeman remains under judicial supervision and his freedom of movement is restricted.
Some 5,900 cars were torched by rioters in the chaos that followed the shooting of the juvenile offender, the likes of which France had not seen since 2005.
Vandals set fire to or caused other damage to 1,100 buildings, including schools, gyms and libraries.
According to estimates by MEDEF, France’s largest employers’ association, the losses to companies exceeded one billion euros.
During the riots, more than 200 businesses were attacked and 300 bank branches were vandalized.
99 city halls were also attacked.
