France requests postponement of Disney + launch due to coronavirus

As an extension of the efforts that have been required of Netflix and YouTube, the government has asked Disney to postpone the launch of its Disney + platform. The Secretary of State for Digital sees this as a danger for bandwidth.

While the European Commission has already obtained from Netflix and YouTube to reduce the definition of their default content, which should significantly lighten the load currently weighing on network infrastructures in Europe, France has a new threat in its sights. According to The echoes, the government turned to Disney to have the entertainment giant postpone the launch in the Hexagon of Disney +, its streaming platform. As of this writing, the firm’s response is not yet known. The launch therefore remains, until further notice, scheduled for Tuesday, March 24.

Already launched in particular across the Atlantic, Disney + is positioning itself as a competitor to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and others, but drawing specifically on the colossal catalog of the Disney empire (which includes not only the masterpieces of animation, but also the Marvel and Star Wars universes). What worries the government is thatit took the platform very little time to attract its first 10 million customers, then to meet the 30 million subscribers despite the small number of countries involved. If the craze were to be the same in France, the consumption of streaming movies could experience a new leap, which would come to weigh heavily on networks already very busy.

Indeed, due to containment measures, the daily life of many French people now oscillates between telework and online entertainment (online game, streaming). Overall, the infrastructure is shocking, but it is out of the question for the government to take the slightest risk of breaking communications. “Today, there is no proven problem of congestion. But we sensed that there was potentially a danger. So we had to act upstream ”, explained Cédric O, Secretary of State for Digital.
